How To Make a No-Sew Mask

It’s been 8 weeks since we’ve closed to help mitigate the spread of Covid 19.  We undoubtedly miss working with all of you.  We hope you’re safe and healthy wherever you are.

I’m waking up our blog to keep everyone up to date with what’s going on with MMNYC but also to share what we hope are helpful tidbits with you.

For those of you religious about checking your email but not so much about being on social media read on.  This is link heavy. Have a field day!  According to one of the CDC’s recommendations we should all be wearing masks when we cannot practice social distancing or isolation. During the times when we cannot practice distancing here are references for a no sew mask and a sew it yourself mask from a local Brooklyn company.

Even if you don’t have a handkerchief then a cut up t-shirt will do. Suggestions for elastics to put around your ears: hair ties, rubber bands, cut up bands from leggings or tights, any elastic: string or ribbon, or strips of t-shirt material knotted on one end into a loop.

Length of elastic will vary with the width of your mask but a good point of reference is your hand. The length of your hand is about the distance from the back of your ear to where the side of a mask would be if it were square. Half the length of your hand is the distance if the mask is rectangular.  For example, any elastic string or t-shirt strip should be about 2.5 length of your hand (the “.5” to account for a little extra) for the making of a knot and slack for the side of a square mask.  Adjust accordingly if your mask is a rectangle.  Ideally, wash your mask daily with soap and warm water.

If you don’t think you have the supplies to make your own please look again. This is a wonderful time to exercise creativity and look at everyday things in a new useful way.

I hope this is helpful to anyone who does not have a mask yet or those who are worried about running out of their disposables. Reduce and Reuse whenever possible!

Lastly, amidst all that’s happening, one of my favorite places to be mindful of my well-being is the kitchen so coming up in the next newsletter: a fantastic sweet potato entree recipe I found online and tested with great success!
